If your gearing now is too short (meaning you are running out of gears too fast), then drop a couple teeth in the rear. Again if you are running stock gearing (14/50), go down to a 48 out back. If you want to make gear changing from one place to the other easy, I would run 14/48 for desert and 13/48 for the track.

I find stock gearing (14/50) has a high first gear (typical motocrosser) and it's too high for technical stuff = always on the clutch, so gearing it down is a good idea in my opinion. The downside is the YZ has a close ratio gearbox and a relatively low top gear so it tops out a bit more so it also depends on what sort of riding you do. The YZ250X’s fifth gear is so tall that it is equivalent to dropping five teeth on the YZ250 rear sprocket. The engine has less compression, a lighter power valve spring, softer clutch springs
